Session 4: 12.15-12.55pm
Room: LK208
Writing a "Lifestyle Directive" for your adult child with autism/DD
An informal lunch discussion group hosted by autism mom Joanne Wickersham, a self-described "compulsive planner" who will share "Brett's Lifestyle Directive," a guidance document for conservators and caregivers for after she's gone.
Says Joanne:
"I've always had kind of a 1 year, 3 year, 5 year, 10 year plan for Brett and I feel that this was a key component to me, as a parent, having the upper hand in knowing exactly what's necessary for Brett to meet with as much success as possible. It takes Brett a while to learn, own and generalize most skills and I knew we had to start early to instill the necessary components into his little being so it was "automatic" as he grew older.
"I created the "Who Is Brett Cordova" outline to give to EVERYONE who had anything to do with Brett. Whether it was a teacher, administrator, recess monitor, bus driver, therapist, babysitter...it was a quick document so that everyone had a really good idea of what made Brett tick, what he could and couldn't do, what he couldn't get away with instead of wasting weeks or months of precious time and money trying to decipher who Brett was.
"And, it's why I eventually created the new blueprint document—planning from my grave, I call it!"
