Introduction to Self-Determination
David Grady and Sheraden Nicholau, SCDD, with Cheryl Hewitt, self advocate, and Martha Johanson, parent advocate
Throughout California, State Council staff have been instrumental in forming each individual regional center advisory committee. Staff are working with advisory committee members to develop outreach strategies to inform all California of the upcoming opportunities for self determined services. David Grady of the Central Coast Office and Sheraden Nicholau of the Bay Area Office, in an inquiry based, discussion format will present. Cheryl Hewitt, self advocate, and Martha Johanson, parent advocate will also share their experiences and insights as they prepare person centered plans and utilize self determined services.
About this session:
In follow up to the presentation offered last year by Gabriel Rogin of State Council, and in compliance with the goals of our State Plan, staff from State Council proposes a presentation on Self Determination.
The presentation will include: An overview of Self Determination, the waiver process, the most recent updates toward implementation, the relationship between self-determination and HCBS Final Rule, a review of financial management, facilitation, and person centered planning.
Examples of how self-determination might be used to promote employment, direct care, and therapeutic services specific to the needs of the person will be offered and discussed.
