Investing in a community housing model
Room: LK209
Investing in a community housing model
Many families have expressed interest in co-investing in innovative housing models where people with and without developmental disabilities live, work and care for one another with mutual respect and dignity.
Two members of the board of the nonprofit Living Unlimited will discuss their own approach, which has a goal of creating housing options for adults with developmental disabilities in rural or suburban settings specifically designed to be close to nature, with gardening, farming and possibly modest animal husbandry.
Living Unlimited plans to organize and manage a group of for-profit property-owning Limited Liability Companies, consisting of some of these families whose children will reside in that community. Tax benefits of owning each property will pass through to investor-families. Investments may also produce a modest return. If the setting is not beneficial to the resident, it will be possible to exit by selling the family’s share of the LLC. Day programs and person-centered residential care will be provided by separate agencies.
Discussion leaders will be Dan Lieberman and Alex Krem, who will be part of a related afternoon Mainstage panel, joined by others from the Living Unlimited Board of Directors and its nine active committees.
